The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, on the front cover of an Italian newspaper, 1914
On 28 June 1914 the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie were shot and killed by an assassin in Sarajevo, a city in the Bosnian region of Austria-Hungary.
Austria-Hungary had recently taken over the Bosnian area and made it part of its empire. The killing of Franz Ferdinand eventually led to the start of the First World War — and 30 million deaths.
The Italian newspaper La Domenica del Corrier printed an illustration of the assassination on its front page.
