Illustration of a dung beetle and a cane toad, by Wolfe Gleitsman

Dung beetles and cane toads are both species of animal that were deliberately introduced into Australia. Dung beetles have proved to be very beneficial, helping to break down livestock manure and limiting the number of buffalo and bush flies. Cane toads, on the other hand, have proved to be very destructive. They produce a poison that can kill native animals and also prey on the beneficial dung beetles.
