On 25 April 1915, during the First World War, 16,000 Australian and New Zealand troops landed at what became known as Anzac Cove as part of a campaign to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. French forces made a diversionary landing at Kum Kale. And British and French forces landed at Cape Helles on the southern tip of the peninsula.
