The MV Tampa

The MV Tampa, a Norwegian container ship. In 2001, the commander of the Tampa, Captain Arne Rinnan, rescued hundreds of asylum-seekers from a stranded Indonesian fishing boat in the Indian Ocean and attempted to bring them to Australia. However, the Australian Government refused to allow the Tampa to land any of the asylum-seekers. The ‘Tampa affair’ resulted in a new Australian ‘border protection’ policy.
