Original 1913 plaque on the Explorers’ Monument in Esplanade Park, Fremantle, Western Australia

The Explorer’s Monument was erected in 1913 to honour Frederick Panter, James Harding and William Goldwyer.

Panter, Harding and Goldwyer were killed by Aboriginal people in 1864, while exploring north-west of Western Australia. In response, a reprisal party of colonists massacred somewhere around 20 Aboriginal people.

In 1994, this plaque was added to the monument to commemorate the Aboriginal people who died as a result of frontier violence.
