Oil on canvas on composition board 122.4 × 183.3 cm. In 1869, at the age of 13, Tom Roberts moved with his family from England to Melbourne. As a teenager he worked as a photographer’s assistant during the day while studying art at night and eventually began classes at the National Gallery School in 1874. Roberts then became of the first Australian artists selected to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London. He returned to Australia in 1885 and introduced many Australian artists to a new art form called impressionism.
