At 11am on 11 November 1918 the Armistice ending the First World War came into effect. After four years of fighting, Germany and its allies were defeated. Tens of millions of people had been killed or injured.
Two months later, delegates of the Western Allies gathered in Paris to determine the terms of the peace, the result was the Treaty of Versailles.
