This cup and saucer was produced to celebrate the opening of Provisional Parliament House (later known as Old Parliament House) by the Duke (later King George VI) and Duchess of York on 9 May 1927. The opening proclaimed the birth of the nation's democratic capital and thousands of Australians travelled to Canberra to celebrate.
