View near Woolwich in Kent shewing [sic] the employment of the convicts from the hulks, about 1800

Before being transported to Australia, convicts were often sent to live on old ships (hulks) which had been turned in to floating prisons. Some convicts waited months, or even years, before being transported. During the day, the prisoners were taken off the ships to work. This painting shows the convicts at work on the banks of the River Thames in London. Their prison hulks are in the background.
