Pemulwuy, Aboriginal Resistance Leader, bronze portrait, by Masha Marjanovich

Pemulwuy (or Bembilwuyam) was a Bidjigal (Bidgigal) man from the Botany Bay area of Sydney, born sometime around 1750.

Two years after the arrival of the First Fleet, Pemulwuy began to resist the incursion of white settlers onto his people’s traditional lands. Despite being seriously wounded in 1797, he eluded capture until 1802 when he was shot dead.
