Casket containing the remains of Mungo Man at the beginning of his repatriation ceremony in Canberra, 2017

The remains of Mungo Man were discovered at Lake Mungo in 1974 by archaeologist Jim Bowler. The remains are between 40,000 and 42,000 years old, among the oldest human remains ever discovered in Australia. In 2017, after more than 40 years in Canberra, Mungo Man’s remains were returned to Lake Mungo and reburied.
