Ceremonial spear, Yolngu people, Arnhem Land

This spear was purchased in Makassarby Carl Alfred Bock in 1879. However, it was made in Northern Australia by the Yolngu people, showing the trade that occurred between the two groups.

From at least 1700 until 1907, hundreds of fishermen sailed each year from Makassar on the island of Sulawesi (now part of Indonesia) to the Arnhem Land coast to fish for trepang (sea cucumber). The Makasar did not settle in Arnhem Land but they did have an influence on the Yolngu people’s society and culture.
