Clement Wragge, 1899

Clement Wragge was a government meteorologist in Queensland between 1887 and 1902. He began the custom of naming weather systems—including after politicians who had annoyed him. Under Wragge’s management, weather stations reported conditions and barometric pressure readings via the overland telegraph line which connected Brisbane to Thursday Island (via Cooktown).
