Emigrants Landing at the Queen’s Wharf, Melbourne, by Frederick Grosse
An illustration of migrants arriving in Melbourne, published in the 1860s.
In the 1800s, many people emigrated from Europe, mostly to the United States and Canada. From the 1830s, Australian colonial governments attracted free settlers by paying, or partially paying, for their travel costs. This policy was known as assisted migration.
