Monument commemorating James Cook’s landing on Possession Island, Torres Strait
This small island is part of the lands of the Kaurareg, Gudang Yadhaykenu, Ankamuthi and other clan groups, who continue to care for it. Some of their ancestors were on the island on the day in 1770 when James Cook landed and claimed possession of Australia for Britain. This monument commemorating that event was erected by the Australian Government in 1925.
