Simon Wonga, chief of the Yarra Yarra people

In early 1863 about 40 people from several Kulin clans walked over the Dandenong Ranges, to Coranderrk. Simon Wonga was one of the clan leaders who led the group to a traditional camp at the junction of the Yarra River and Badger Creek. Later that year the area was set aside as a reserve for Aboriginal people of south-central Victoria. In this photograph, taken by Carl Walter, Wonga is age 37.
