Before Federation the Australian colonies had their own small naval fleets.

At Federation, the power of making laws about defence was transferred from the individual states to the new national parliament.

How would the new parliament exercise that power for the benefit and security of Australia? Would it mark a break with dependence on Britain for Australia’s national security?

Read the information about the arrival of the Australian naval fleet in the Defining Moment in Australian history: 1913 The newly created Royal Australian Navy’s ‘fleet unit’ sails into Sydney Harbour. Use that information to answer these questions.
