5.2 1854 Eureka Stockade
In 1854 a group of miners fought soldiers and police at a rough stockade on the Eureka goldfield at Ballarat, Victoria.
Was it a riot or a revolution? Was it an attempt to improve democracy or a tax revolt? Did it achieve anything that was not already available? Was it really a significant event in the development of Australian democracy?
Read the information about the Eureka Stockade conflict in the Defining Moment in Australian history: 1854 Rebellion of goldminers at Eureka Stockade, Ballarat, Victoria. Use that information to answer these questions.
Look back at the Key Questions. Which of these questions do you think you can now answer fully? Which need more research?
