Australia since Federation Defining Moments, 1901–present
Investigation 1: Making the nation’s rule book
1.3 What was ‘Federation’?
In 1900 the six colonies in Australia were all British colonies, but they were all separate from each other.
The map looked like this:
1. Before Federation, each colony operated independently. This caused a number of problems which were solved when the colonies were joined together to create a new nation.
The grey boxes on the left below are a list of problems the colonies were facing. The yellow boxes on the right are the solutions, but they are in the wrong order. Drag the yellow box solutions until they are next to the correct problem.
2. Which of these five problems do you think was the most important to solve? Give reasons for your answer.
